But others are complaining about the extra time it will take to travel through the area.
On Friday, traffic lights along the Princes Highway at the Woollybutt Drive and Nehme Avenue intersection were turned on.
The news sparked a range of reactions through the Illawarra Mercury's Facebook page.
For many living in the area, the news was very welcome, believing it will reduce accidents and make driving safer.
"When you live in the streets just off there trying to get in and out at peak times is horrendous," wrote Steph Jayne.
"This is going to make life easier for a lot of people and if you have to wait another set of lights to get through so be it."
Matt Johnson said the lights were vital now that the southbound access from Woollybutt Drive to the East-West Link has been cut off.
"People living in the area need it as it was impossible to turn right out of there," he wrote.
Linda Schwartz felt it was "too long coming" as there were accidents at the intersection almost every week, while Kaitlin Louth felt it was "the greatest thing they ever did for people living in Nehme Avenue".
But not everyone was happy with a seventh set of lights added to this stretch of the Princes Highway.
"Absolutely ridiculous," said Donna Csomor. "Do it now and slow everything down even more - stupid."
Roger De Gabriele said he expected traffic to become "bumper to bumper" on the highway and suggested a roundabout would have been a better option.
"It's a waste of money and it makes it that much slower," wrote Andrew Roberts.
For Craig Taylor, and many others, the short-term pain would be gone once the Albion Park Rail bypass opened.
"Stop whinging and wait for the end result - the big picture," he wrote.
