According to Transport for NSW, two of the three lifts at Thirroul station - one on the western side and one on the eastern side - were still out of order as of Tuesday morning.

One was back in working order late on Tuesday.

Thirroul is one of the so-called "hub" stations for South Coast express services to Sydney.

Helensburgh is also a hub station - and both of its lifts were out of action.

The lift on the western side of North Wollongong station was also still not working on Tuesday.

The Illawarra was not alone - across the rail network as of Tuesday, there were more that 40 broken lifts at various stations.

A spokeswoman for Transport for NSW said the outages in the Illawarra were "due to flooding and power failures as a result of the extreme weather conditions over the weekend".

"Crews are currently responding to a number of urgent infrastructure repairs, and unless damage is more significant than expected, we anticipate having the lifts working again by the end of the week," the spokeswoman said.

The rains also played havoc with Opal card readers at various train stations, though it was unclear as to how many - if any - were on the South Coast line.

The readers had been hit with power outages due to the weekend deluge and Transport for NSW is in the process of identifying the affected locations.

On their social media platform Transport for NSW said it would "in most instances" automatically adjust fares.

"Customers should check their statement in a few days, and request an adjustment via transportnsw.info/opal if their fares haven't been corrected," the statement read.

Commuters using contactless payment would need to apply for a refund via the contactless payment page on that same website.
