Chris Druery was taking her son Ethan to competitions in Sydney for years so decided to bring a World Cube Association event to St Joseph's Catholic Parish Primary School at Bulli on Sunday.
Co-organiser Jackie Stephenson said the speedcubing event challenged kids and adults to solve 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 and pyramid Rubik's Cubes with advanced cubers competing one-handed and blindfolded.
"Within 24 hours we filled the 80 spots and had 60 people on the waiting list," she said.
"There were competitors from Sydney, Blue Mountains, Canberra and Wollongong.
"We hope to host another event given the interest of this one."
Ethan Druery said he enjoyed competing because every cube solve was different, it was challenging and he liked learning new algorithms.
He knows more than 600 combinations and his personal best was solving the 3x3 cube in 10 seconds.
"It is good to have the competition here because it is local, it's the first one in Wollongong and the community has come together to have a good day," competitor Zane Thomas said.
Alexander Gallagher said he enjoyed making new friends and loved the challenge of solving the cube.
