Police were called to a petrol station on the Princes Highway, Unanderra, after witnesses reportedly approached a car and found the driver slumped in the seat about 8.30pm on Sunday.
The witnesses told police they removed the keys from the car's ignition.
Police were told the vehicle had previously been seen driving dangerously along the highway.
Police were called and spoke to the driver, before he was subjected to a roadside breath test which returned a positive result.
The 31-year-old man was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where a breath analysis allegedly returned a reading of 0.183.
He was issued a Court Attendance Notice for drive with high-range PCA and is due to appear before Kiama Local Court on May 5.
His licence was also suspended.
Lake Illawarra Police District Commander Superintendent Dean Smith said police will continue to crack down on drink driving.
"Getting behind the wheel after a few drinks puts everyone at risk, and it is behaviour that we simply will not tolerate," Superintendent Smith said.
"We are encouraging all road users to continue to remain vigilant and report dangerous driving to police.
"Thanks to quick thinking members of the public, the driver was unable to continue using the road while allegedly under the influence of alcohol."
Drink driving was the focus of a road safety enforcement campaign conducted across the Southern Region over the weekend.
Souther region police conducted more than 34,000 random breath tests and charged 42 people with drink driving.
Twenty-five seatbelt offences were detected and 525 tickets were issued for speeding.
