The region's pelicans have a friend in Shellharbour Councillor Peter Moran, who is continuing to explore whether they can be provided with roosting places to counter all the spikes that have been erected.

Every Shellharbour resident knows light poles are best avoided, given the likelihood of a large bird sitting directly above you while walking - or parking - beneath.
But the number of anti-bird spikes installed by various agencies to keep the pelicans off the poles has the birds left roosting on the power cables above - not the safest option, according to Cr Moran.
Given that infrastructure owned by various agencies near Shellharbour boat harbour has anti-roosting spikes, and given that pelicans still roost on unsuitable infrastructure such as electricity wires, is it possible or desirable for council to provide roosting platforms for birds in this area?
Pelicans still roost on unsuitable infrastructure such as electricity wires
- Cr Peter Moran
Council staff had already started work on researching this proposal and will report to a future council meeting.
Cr Moran tried to raise some urgent business at last week's meeting but Mayor Marianne Saliba did not accept that it was urgent, and recommended Cr Moran follow up with the council's director of amenity and assets.
