AJ Ogilvy thought he'd seen it all during his 10-year professional career. But he's never experienced anything like this COVID-19 period.
The Illawarra Hawks centre was among the many Australians who had to make the mad dash home from overseas on Friday night.
Like many others, Ogilvy is now in self isolation at home in Sydney for the coming fortnight.
It's a dramatic change in plans for the 31-year-old, who was based in Thessaloniki and preparing to represent Iraklis BC in the Greek Basketball League.
"It was planned that we were going to play without fans at the game on the Sunday [March 15]," he said.
"On the Thursday, we woke up and it all went south rather quickly. Then the NBA cancelled their games and Europe followed. Greece suspended all games for that first meeting and then planned to have a meeting on the Monday with all owners in the league, which got pushed back to Wednesday.
"As that date got closer and closer, my team made the decision to send all imports home because it looked like America was going to lock down all of its borders and Australia was going to do the same thing.
"Each day in Greece, they were closing down more and more things to where on my last day there, only the chemists and supermarkets were open. You weren't even allowed to go in to the chemists, they would come and meet you outside and give you what you needed. It kind of went from everyone thinking 'wow, everything is kind of crazy in Italy' to everything stopping [in Greece too]."
By early Thursday morning, Ogilvy had boarded a plane to Sydney via stop over in Abu Dhabi. He arrived in Australia on Friday night.
"I just wanted to get on a flight back as early as possible because things were changing so quickly - I didn't know what was going to happen," the veteran said.
"After our team decided to send us home, it was a mad rush to pack up. When I was one of my way home, Australia made the decision to close the borders. My flight from Abu Dhabi was one of the last ones to land before that 9pm lockout ... it was pretty hectic.
"I've never experienced anything like this before, it's a pretty unique experience. I think the most shocking thing to me was how quickly it went from being a precautionary thing - we won't let fans in this weekend and see what happens - to leagues being suspended, and all the gyms being closed by government order."
Ogilvy is now in self isolation in Sydney. He couldn't even return to his Wollongong home, as he'd rented it out for the coming months.
It's a less than ideal situation for Ogilvy, who hopes to be in tip-top shape ahead of the next NBL season. The ball is in the Hawks' court whether they re-sign him.
"My whole plan of going overseas to play was to keep in shape. I wanted to make sure that when I came back in the pre-season, it wasn't such a tough grind," he said.
"It's a team option [contract with Illawarra]. But I have a burning desire to get back out there and try correct the ship from where we were last year. Obviously injuries and all that played a part... but it doesn't help when you see yourself at the bottom of the table with a pretty negative record. I have a burning passion to get out there and make amends."
