As the fallout from coronavirus continues to spread, Racing NSW announced Sunday morning the prize money on offer across the two-week The Championships carnival will be slashed.
The winnings on offer for the 10 headline races have been cut in half, while the Provincial and Country Championships have faced a 20% reduction.
The horses will now race for a share of $400,000 in the two finals, a drop from the initial pool of $500,000.
The move came as betting revenue has plummeted following the closure of all TAB outlets and pubs and clubs and the banning of spectators on track.
Electric Girl will fly the flag for the Illawarra's stables, the three-year-old to enter the event on the back of a three-race winning streak. She will be ridden by Glen Boss in the final on April 11.
The last of those wins was a victory in the Kembla Grange qualifier.
"She certainly knows how to win a race," Markwell told Sky Racing after the race.
"I said to (jockey Travis Wolfgram), be a little bit positive, I know she's got a lot of speed and the light weight on her back. You don't want her back in a crowd of horses, so he rode her a treat."
The Illawarra's trainers will have one last chance to qualify for the final after Saturday's Wyong heat was abandoned due to heavy rain.
Racing NSW are still finalising plans to run the qualifier during the week.
