From Tuesday limits apply to beer (two cases), cider (two cases), premix (two cases), wine (12 bottles) casks (two) and spirits (two bottles).
On top of this, people can only buy the maximum items in two of these categories in a single transaction.
The voluntary national initiative will involve members of Retail Drinks Australia, which includes Dan Murphys, First Choice, Liquorland, BWS, Cellabrations, Aldi, Bottlemart and Bottlo franchises among others.
It's a move brought about in response to panic buying two weeks ago when rumours ran wild that the government was going to close bottle shops.
The rush saw bottle shops shelves picked clean.
"It was clear that uncertainty on the impact of supply following the closure of pubs, clubs and restaurants last week caused some people to purchase differently," said Retail Drinks Australia CEO Julie Ryan.
However she stressed there were no "issues of supply" and that bottle shops remained an "essential service".
"These temporary measures will ensure that all consumers can continue to access their favourite drinks when they decide to make a purchase," Ms Ryan said.
