Following an investigation by the Professional Standards Command, detectives searched a home in Horsley about 8.15am.
They seized a number of electronic and storage devices, which will undergo forensic examination.
A 38-year-old senior constable was arrested at the home and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with one count of access and possess child abuse material.
He was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Wollongong Local Court on June 16.
