The NSW government announced on Wednesday morning that golf, tennis and fishing could continue amid the COVID-19 crisis.
Following a review, Tennis NSW decided to allow tennis facilities to remain open - under strict measures.
These social distancing restrictions include one-one-one coaching sessions while people can hire courts for singles matches only.
Barkley, who is based at the Wollongong Tennis Centre, said the decision was a "good thing" for people's physical and mental health.
"People are commenting all the time when they come in about how good it is to get outside and do something," Barkley said. "There's restrictions, but it's just a case of doing the right thing."
However, operations at Barkley's centre have been temporarily suspended.
"We had been operating up until Wednesday," he said.
"The [original] statements from Tennis NSW were only recommendations to close up until Wednesday. We stayed open based on the information earlier about things like social distancing.
"In the meantime, our board at Beaton Park have decided to close us up until a board meeting on Monday. They made their decision before the latest statement came out from Tennis NSW.
"Hopefully we can get back out on court soon. We'd been following all the guidelines... it seemed to be working pretty well for us. I'm not sure what other tennis centres are doing around the area."
