Police will allege John David Fleet sexually assaulted a girl, then aged between six and 15, on multiple occasions between 1993 and 2003 in the Illawarra region.
In February 2019, Lake Illawarra Police District established Strike Force Bestic to investigate reports a woman had been sexually assaulted as a child by a man who was known to her.
Following extensive inquiries, investigators executed a search warrant at a home in Warilla about 7am on Wednesday.
Fleet, aged 60, was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with six counts of sexual intercourse with person under the age of 10 years, two counts of sexual intercourse with person aged between 10 and 16, and two counts of aggravated indecent assault.
Fleet did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.
The case will return to Wollongong Local Court on June 3.
