Represented by the United Workers Union, the Camp Australia employees had previously organised an open letter to management, where the health and safety measures they required to continue working safely were outlined.

The measures included access to hand sanitizer and temperature checks for children entering the service.

In particular, the staff are calling for lower children to staff ratios to ensure that they are able to properly care for the amount of children they are dealing with while upholding social distancing requirements.

There are nine Camp Australia services operating in the Illawarra.

An employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said "we're performing a crucial service to society, but it feels like we are being taken for granted.

"Currently our ratios are one staff member to 15 children. At the best of times, that makes it hard to perform our duty of care. But now, when we're told to enforce social distancing for ourselves and among the children, it is going to make it almost impossible to keep them safe."

In response to these concerns management stated in their letter of response - "we have issued clear guidelines based on the advice of the health authorities, that if followed, are sufficient."

UWU want all Camp Australia employees to be eligible for Job Seeker Keeper payment under the government's guidelines, including international students and casuals who have been with the company for less than 12 months.

Camp Australia employees are also calling for the United Workers Union's 6 Point Plan to stop the spread of COVID-19 to be implemented in all services, and for staff to children ratios to be decreased to one staff member for each eight children across the country.
