Issuing his first self-produced singles in 2019, 16-year-old Dharawal singer/songwriter Aodhan (Aidan Whitehall) won JJJ's Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative with his song When Your Eyes Speak.
As part of his prize, he won a mentoring day at school with ARIA Award winning singer/songwriter Josh Pyke last September.
On Friday, Aodhan released Drive, the track which he collaborated on with musical hero Pyke and was produced by JP Fung.
Pyke co-wrote the new track with Aodhan, the latter also playing the instruments.
Pyke didn't contribute to the actual recording.
"Drive is a song about the complexities of teenage emotions and behaviours and how they often shift from one to another," Aodhan said.
"I took inspiration from a friend of mine who does really quite well in school, but also wants to rebel and date 'bad boys'. At least that's what she told me at the time I began writing the song."
The teenager initially envisioned making Drive an indie-rock/pop song.
However, he never managed to get very far with the idea, and it remained unfinished for a long time.
Ultimately, Drive has taken on more of a pop sound.
"Little did I know that I was going to end up finishing the song with an Australian artist of my choice, let alone win Unearthed High's Indigenous Initiative," Aodhan said.
The new single is already gaining traction with a premiere on Triple J Unearthed, and being added to Spotify's 'New Music Friday'.
Earlier this year, the Footstomp Music
and Kadence Group signed Aodhan to their management roster.
Footstomp Music and Kadence Group's current management roster includes Tia Gostelow, Busby Marou and Colin Lillie.
