Mr Murray said it was a case of sharing some of the great community spirit he has been observing in the streets around Wollongong while driving his ice-cream van in recent weeks.
The man who describes himself as the Alf Stewart of the soft serve vendor industry, because he knows and chats to everyone, said one positive that has come from COVID-19 is it has brought people and neighbourhoods closer together.
Drawing on more than three decades experience in the game Mr Murray said it has been years since he has seen so many people talking to each other over the fence or helping each other out with DIY projects in the front or backyard.
He said this Sunday afternoon's exercise came about when he approached the Sheargold Group who had called on his services before at community events they have staged for residents at Vista Park.
Following a discussion they each decided to put in $500 to provide $1000 worth of free ice creams for people living in the new land development area.
"I'm looking forward to driving every street and serving our tasty treats," Mr Murray said.
He thinks the giveaway will be a first of its kind in Australia.
"We all know that businesses like mine do static giveaways, like I did at the RFS fun day at Stuart Park after the bushfires," he said.
"But nothing like this. It is unique having an ice cream van, drive streets and giving away free ice-cream.
"Sheargold and Kens Cones are serving up a little cheer to the residents in these uncertain times".
