With physical races off the table for the near future, Athletics NSW have unveiled the second of their virtual run series and Wollongong will be home to one of the proposed routes.
While the exact course has not been finalised, it is expected to include a five kilometre loop that starts at City Beach and closely mirrors the old Fitness 5 track.
Athletics NSW chief executive Kirin Lindop said the route is ideally suited for such an event.
"With a virtual series, when we first set it up, we have to pick locations that can allow for social distancing," Lindop said. "It's great to have a proposed course in a local area like the lighthouse in Wollongong that is central.
"Also for those engaging in running for the first time, it's great to run with the lighthouse view and the ocean view, which enhances the experience."
The new virtual fun run differs slightly to the initial virtual run series that required entrants to complete three separate runs to qualify.
Competitors in this event will be provided with training programs for five weeks before the 5km race between June 22 and 28.
Runners must run the distance at any time in that week and upload their result to the event website to be recognised as a finisher.
With organisers encouraging social distancing, solo running is recommended and there is no requirement to follow the proposed Wollongong route.
