Nearly $13,000 had been raised as of Sunday via a GoFundMe appeal, little more than a week after the page was launched.

Meanwhile, community members have also been busy pitching in, establishing a private Facebook group to co-ordinate other ways to assist the family, such as cooking meals and mowing lawns.

The nine-year-old will be undergoing treatment in Sydney, which will require her family to travel frequently to be by her side.

Charli's mother Faye said they had been "blown away" by the response, which had made it easier for them to cope during this difficult time.

"It's been amazing," she said.

"I knew we were surrounded by some awesome people, but my husband and I have just been completely blown away by how caring, generous and supportive people have been.

"It's not just been the money that people have donated - there's been a massive outpouring of support through so many different avenues.

"We had never anticipated or expected that, and it's been really heart-warming, because it's a bad time for us at the moment. I don't think we ever realised the kind of love, support and generosity that was around us until now."

Mrs Gerrey said Woonona Public School student Charli had started chemotherapy, with the family preparing for a "two-year marathon" of treatments.

"She's doing well in the grand scheme of things," she said.

"We're two weeks in. It's a long haul... There's going to be lots of ups and downs along the way.

"But I think what this has taught us is we have some remarkable people around us to support us."

By Friday, the $10,000 fundraising goal had been exceeded, with the total aim now increased to $15,000.

Funds raised will go directly to the Gerrey family to help ease the burden of medical expenses as well as day-to-day living costs of travelling back and forth to Sydney for treatments.

A close contact of the family, Melinda Kitto, launched the fundraiser.

She said friends and family have been shocked and devastated by the "gut-wrenching" news.

"Charli with her beautiful parents Faye and Will, and little sister Chloe have had their lives flipped upside down in an instant and they now face a long and daunting road ahead," she said.

"We hope to make that road a little easier for them.

"Fortunately, there is a whole village of people who know and love this family, or who will be touched by their story and who want to help.

"Charli has the best parents in her corner who have instilled in her the positivity and resilience she'll need to get through this, and they are the perfect people to support her every step of the way."
