The first shark sighting was at McCauleys Beach, Thirroul at 6:45am prompting surfers to leave the water.
Illawarra Surf Life Saving duty officer Anthony Turner also spotted a shark off Bell's Point, at an Austinmer beach.

The shark was thrashing about in the water chasing baitfish just after 7am.
Mr Turner said if swimmers or surfers saw diving birds and baitfish around, then sharks may be present and they should leave the water immediately.
"We just want the public to be alert and not alarmed by the sightings this morning," Mr Turner said.
Other advice included, always keep a eye out for any marine animals out there; don't swim in murky waters; avoid sandbars, river mouths and steep drop offs.
