This year been the busiest on record for Lifeline Australia, which is now receiving a call from someone in crisis every 30 seconds.
Calls have soared at the South Coast centre too - due to many residents' struggles with bushfires, floods and the COVID-19 threat.
"This year has been tough for many, for so many reasons," Mr Ivey said. "That's why there's an increased need for volunteers like me, who can let those in distress know they're being heard and supported."
The 22-year-old is in the honours year of his psychology degree, and has started work as a mental health support worker.
However Lifeline South Coast CEO Renee Green said volunteer telephone crisis supporters came from all walks of life - and urged community members to consider helping out.
"We are partnering with BlueScope to run a new volunteer training course in August," she said.
"We have a really diverse range of callers, so are looking for a really diverse range of volunteers.
"There's no prerequisite skills or qualifications needed - we just need people who have empathy for others and are available to volunteer their time."
BlueScope Australian Steel Products chief executive John Nowlan said the employer was not immune to the issues facing the community.
"We've supported Lifeline for more than 20 years," he said. "We're more conscious of people's well-being and mental health today - and it's even more front of mind this year with the bushfires and (the pandemic).
"What Lifeline does is pretty important in the fabric of this community, and that's why we continue to support them."
An information evening will be held on July 1; for information or to register email training@llsc.org.au.
