Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Abrar Shabren told the Mercury there was a front moving across NSW and along the coast.
He said showers would continue for most of Saturday and Sunday in the Illawarra.
"As we move towards the later part of Sunday into Monday, we will see the development of a low pressure system off the coast of NSW, and potentially an East Coast low as well," he said.
"Earlier in the week, we mentioned the system being anywhere between the north and south of the coast, but at this stage we're looking more so towards the South Coast of NSW.
"From the Illawarra down south towards Bega, we will see the system developing, and potential heavy rain in various parts of the South Coast, including the Illawarra, Kiama, Jervis Bay down to Moruya and Bega as well.
"At this stage the rainfall amounts can be quite variable, but we're looking at somewhere from upwards of 50mm to 100mm in 24 hours from Monday."
He said the rain throughout the region would be accompanied by heavy swells and strong winds, including potentially gale force winds on the coastal fringe.
Mr Shabren said the rain would continue for most of next week, although will be reduced to showers from Wednesday onwards as the system moves eastward.
