Bowen was featured in the first of two Showdown nights on Sunday. The South Coast singer chose Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' but had stiff competition from the other members of Team Guy.
Artists were able to choose their own songs for the first time.
Prior to the performance Guy Sebastian said it was not a song he would have chosen for him.
But afterwards said it was an amazing experience to sit back and let Bowen grab the steering wheel.
"You grabbed it tonight and my goodness I love that you have taken that direction," he said.
"We have seen you before be tender. And we have seen you be romantic. But now we have seen the rockier side of you. And damn, bang, that pocket was so groovy and I was jealous you got to sing in front of an incredible band like that. Well done".
West Australian balladeer Matt Gresham chose an original song called 'Who Am I Now" with judge Delta Goodrem saying it was a risk that 'really paid off'.
And Sebastian was really moved by Johnny Manuel's performance of his song Before I Go.
Manuel was the first Sebastian chose to go through from his team saying he has "one of the most incredible voices I've heard".
Sebastian then revealed Bowen was the second member of the team to make it through to the semi finals this Tuesday night on Nine.
"The artists that I feel deserves the second spot is somebody who captivated me from the beginning. This person has not set a foot wrong. This person challenges me and inspires me to be a better artist because of their gift. The person I will be taking through to join Johnny is Timothy Bowen," Sebastian said.
After his performance Goodrem said Fleetwood Mac was a great choice.
"I think it is a really important opportunity for all the artists tonight to really tell us "this is what I would sing". And I would love you to play it again as an encore".
Boy George said he would have liked to hear another one of his original songs.
"Your voice is incredible. You have great range and great warmth. But maybe you are at your best when you are singing about stuff that really means something to you emotionally".
Bowen, 30, grew up in Minnamurra but now calls Ulladulla home.
The blood cancer survivor captured the heart of the nation and the judges performing Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me during the Channel Nine program's blind auditions. Before performing an original song, The Greatest Thing, a wedding song for his wife Christina Mullany.
Bowen is the brother of Nashville actor/singer Clare Bowen. If he is one of the final four chosen during the semi finals on Tuesday he will qualify for the grand final on Sunday, July 19.
