The council put the final touches on Reed Park Dog Park, in Dapto, this week - which will be welcome news for owners of the city's 60,000-odd dogs.
The grassed park is around 2500sqm and provides two fenced areas - one for large dogs over 15 kilograms and another for small dogs.
There are play tunnels, seating, dog waste bags and bins, and a water fountain with dog bowl.
Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said Wollongong had one of the highest rates of dog ownership in NSW, which is why the city needed to provide spaces for them to safely exercise.
"While we are fortunate to have beaches that are dog friendly, it is important that we provide other opportunities for dog owners to exercise their pets in a secure off-leash area," he said.
All of council's off-leash area rules apply to the dog park: dogs must be under the control of someone aged 16 years or older, who must carry, and use, poo bags for any waste removal.
Dogs are not allowed in off-leash areas if they are a restricted breed or have been declared menacing or dangerous.
Cr Bradbery said dog owners should be courteous to other owners and animals and remain in control of their dog while using all off-leash areas.
Wollongong's off-leash dog parks are located at:
- Proud Park, Helensburgh
- Figtree Oval, Figtree
- Riley Park, Unanderra
- King George V Oval, Port Kembla
- Reed Park, Dapto
- Eleebana Reserve, Koonawarra.
