In the period since 9am on Monday, 57mm of rain fell in Bellambi, 74mm in Kiama, while further south, Nowra received 110mm.

In Wollongong and Nowra the rain is tipped to disappear by Tuesday afternoon.

In the meantime, the Illawarra Highway between Princes Highway and Taylor Road remains closed and the Transport Management Centre is advising motorists to exercise caution as some local council roads could be closed as well.

Jamberoo Mountain Road is closed due to a landslip. Kiama council hopes to be able to provide an update late this afternoon.

Endeavour Energy will be busy restoring power to 6100 homes and businesses that lost electricity in the wild weather.

The worst hit area was Sanctuary Point, where 1642 premises were in the dark on Monday night, followed by Bawley Point (800), Old Erowal Bay (544) and Ulladulla (387).

An Endeavour Energy spokeswoman said that at the height of the storm on Monday, more than 15,000 customers were without electricity due to the extensive damage caused by strong winds and torrential rain.

Crews worked late into Monday night to restore supply where possible, extensive repairs are required today to get power safely back to all storm affected customers.

Almost 200 electrical hazards need to be repaired on Tuesday, including fallen powerlines.

To aid in the effort, Endeavour Energy has brought in extra crews from the Illawarra and Western Sydney.

The Endeavour Energy spokeswoman reminded people to stay at least eight metres from fallen powerlines and report them immediately by calling Endeavour Energy's emergency line on 131 003.
