Wollongong Hiroshima Day Committee will mark the occasion with a small remembrance ceremony in Wollongong Mall (at the Peace Plaque) between 7.45am and 8.15am.
On August 6, 1945, at a few minutes after 8am, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. The bomb was known as "Little Boy", and exploded with about 13 kilotons of force. At the time of the bombing, Hiroshima was home to 280,000-290,000 civilians as well as 43,000 soldiers.
"We could not let this anniversary pass without remembering this terrible event which ushered in the nuclear arms age," Wollongong Hiroshima Day Committee spokeswoman Dr Margaret Perrott said.
"In a world where multiple nuclear weapons exist, and in which tensions are growing between nations who control them, the threat today is as real as it was 75 years ago.
"Each year we gather for one minute's silence and a few words of remembrance at 8am. We say Hiroshima never again!"
The event will have less than 20 people, social distancing, masks and hand sanitiser.
