After a public appeal for assistance, police arrested the 32-year-old man in Bong Bong Street.
He was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with an outstanding warrant.
A police spokeswoman said he is due to be returned to a correctives facility.
3.30pm Wednesday: Authorities have revoked the parole of one-time Illawarra Brothers 4 Life gang lieutenant Richard Dutton, declaring him a wanted man.
Police have warned against approaching the 32-year-old, who is known to frequent the Albion Park Rail and Horsley areas. He is described as being of Middle Eastern appearance, about 180cms tall with a large build, black hair and brown eyes.
A photograph provided by police shows him with a beard, but he is believed to now be clean-shaven.
Dutton was on parole for participating in a criminal group.
The Mercury understands he was released from prison earlier this year after serving a two-year term for firing a shortened .22 shotgun into the air outside Lake Illawarra Police Station on January 4, 2018.
He left the gun inside a car that was then driven away, and immediately surrendered to police, telling them, "I'm not armed, I'm not armed, I want to be arrested.".
Jail calls later recorded between him and Illawarra B4L chapter leader Damien Featherstone captured Featherstone directing Dutton to bash certain other inmates while behind bars.
Dutton was a young man in 2004 when he was jailed for at least 18 months on a charge of kidnapping.
In 2009 he was involved in a home invasion, resulting in an eight-month jail term.
He was jailed for six years (three years' non-parole) in 2012 on a charge of robbery armed with an offensive weapon and was still on parole when he carried out the police station shooting.
As police continue to conduct inquiries into his whereabouts, they are urging anyone who may have information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, and anyone who sees Dutton directly to call triple-zero.
