McGregor parted ways with the Dragons, after seven years at the helm, following last week's dramatic upset victory over the Eels.
Young has since taken the reins in a caretaker capacity and will coach his first game against Brisbane on Friday.
He'll be one of the leading candidates for the long-term gig, though the club is expected to consider several candidates.
Bennett has been repeatedly linked to a Dragons return, despite having a year to run on his deal with the Rabbitohs.
His mooted return could come as head coach with Young assisting as part of a succession plan, like the one the Rabbitohs have with current assistant Jason Demtriou.
Bennett was one to talk up Young's capabilities as a head coach this week, leading to suggestions he could return to the Dragons in a coaching director's role to assist what would be a rookie coach. Young insisted his focus remains on the six remaining weeks this season, but said he's open to possibilities beyond that.
"I speak to Wayne quite regularly so he rang me and gave me a bit of advice," Young said on Thursday.
"I'd tell you [what was said] but Wayne gets cranky when I tell people secrets so I'm not allowed to say. A strength of mine is working with all different people.
"Mary changed the staff a fair bit in his seven-year period here. Mick Crawley was here as an assistant coach, Wayne Collins, Jason Demetriou was here.
"I worked extremely well with all of them and I've still got good relationships with them so, if the club were to go down that path, I'm comfortable working with anyone because that's a strength of mine.
"Right now I've got two great assistants in Shane Flanagan and James Shepherd who've got a lot of experience behind them.
"They've been great, they know I want to do it my way, they've been very supportive and I'm going to lean on them for a lot of things."
