The Wollongong & South Coast Legacy Club looks after 1150 veterans' families, providing services like social and financial assistance, home visits, day trips, education support, and holiday camps for Legacy Youth, and Ryan Aitchison at The Illawarra hotel decided he wanted to help that continue this year.
Mr Aitchison had just finished compiling a local wine list and labelling where all beers on tap come from when he heard the news and decided to support local business and charity at the same time by announcing $1 from every local schooner of beer sold this week would go to Legacy.
"And we are trying to sell as many badges as we can over the bar and get donations as well."
Mr Aitchison said the new labels on the tap beer were to start a conversation about where beers come from. He said when people saw that VB was now owned by the Japanese they were blown away.
"We are helping people be more conscious about where they are spending their money."
Mr Aitchison said so far, people were interested in the local beers on tap and asking about them, but wee still choosing to go for what they had always drunk.
As for the new local wine list he said "I have really done a lot of work finding the cream of the crop from the Southern Highlands and South Coast."
"We have a cracker bunch of 13 local wines that cater for every wine drinker. It is good to draw attention to our local producers."
