Update 10.15am: Appin Road has reopened in both directions at Cataract following a three-car crash near the Princes Motorway.

The road had been closed between Wilton Road at Appin and Princes Motorway at Cataract.

Emergency services and traffic crews have left the scene of the crash.

Traffic in the area is returning to normal now that all lanes are open.

Earlier: Appin Road is closed in both directions after a woman was seriously injured in a high-speed crash at Cataract, just west of the M1.

Two cars travelling at an estimated 80km/h and 100km/h collided about 7.45am Wednesday.

A third car was also caught up in the collision.

A male and female driver have come away from the crash with relatively minor injuries, both requiring ambulances.

A third driver, a woman aged 42, remained trapped in the wreckage for about 40 minutes.

The road is closed between the M1 and Wilton. As at 8.25am, a chopper is overhead, looking for a suitable place to land.

Initial reports are that the woman has suffered a fractured wrist, multiple fractures to her lower limbs and internal bleeding.

Police, Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Ambulance crews have been called to the scene and the road is expected to remain closed for some time.

Traffic already on Appin Road is being turned around and should follow directions of crews in the area.

Motorists should avoid the area and use Picton Road and Hume Motorway or Princes Highway, Princes Motorway instead.
