Just seven days after Stuart Beedie departed as the club's Premier League coach, Paul Michlmayr led the Lions to their first win of the season on Saturday night.
It was the perfect start for the team's former assistant Michlmayr, who will coach the Lions in 2021, as Cringila recorded a 5-3 victory over South Coast United at Ian McLennan Park.
Nick High and Nuno Pires mustered doubles for the winners while teammate Toby Norval also found the back of the net. Ricky Bertakis, Anthony Pedalovi and Kieran Brodnick scored for SCU.
Michlmayr said it was a great win.
"I'm really happy for the boys. It was about them this week, not me," he said.
"I'm really glad they got the result. We did it the hard way but we always knew that we had goals in us. I'm really proud of the group.
"It was a more free flowing than we'd like, it was end to end stuff for the first half. We changed things a bit up in the second to try stagnate that little bit, and it seemed to work."
With two rounds remaining in the season, and the Lions out of finals contention, Michlmayr said it was important that they build on Saturday night's win,
"That was the first step for us," he said.
"We've got the monkey off our back with the win and now we'll look to continue to take some positives from that game."
In Saturday's other IPL results, Wollongong United sealed a 3-2 win over Bellambi at Elizabeth Park, Bulli and Corrimal played out a 2-all draw at Balls Paddock while Woonona and Coniston were also forced to share the points following a 1-all draw.
Port Kembla tackles Tarrawanna at Wetherall Park and the Albion Park White Eagles will meet Wollongong Olympic on Sunday to close out round nine.
