He had been walking west, near Bethlehem Street, when he was struck by the vehicle.
The Lake Illawarra Police Duty Officer on Sunday confirmed the driver had allegedly left the scene, and the Crash Investigation Unit were looking into it.
The victim suffered critical leg injuries and head injuries, according to a NSW Ambulance spokesman.
A rescue helicopter was tasked to the incident and landed at King George V Oval at Port Kembla.
The victim was airlifted to St George Hospital just before midnight, where he remains in a critical condition.
