Many businesses supported during the last six months will miss out, according to Illawarra Business Chamber executive director Adam Zarth.
Mr Zarth said businesses in the accommodation, food services and events industry were still suffering from social distancing restrictions and would like to see JobKeeper extended.
But there were other businesses coming off JobKeeper who were in a much better position than they were in March and for the sake of the national economy didn't want to see governments continuing to shell out large amounts of support where it was not necessary.
"Business people will want to see a sensible approach to managing the nation's finances," Mr Zarth said.
The chamber would like to see help given to those who still really needed it without putting the national economy too far into debt. Mr Zarth said many small businesses were still struggling because of restricted numbers due to social distancing.
And some larger venues such as Dapto Leagues Club were still being impacted but won't be eligible for JokKeeper assistance at the end of September. Club CEO David Hiscox told him the club was just going to have to ride it out to see how things went.
Mr Zarth said 46 per cent of businesses in the region registered for the first round of JobKeeper. However, the latest data showed there were now 1500 more people in work, which indicated the local economy had rebounded considerably in recent months. He said the chamber lobbied the government earlier this year to taper and target JobKeeper and that was what it was doing.
