"It's been really good - for a little ensuite, it's got so much attention," Aleasha Mawhinnew said.

"We didn't do it for anyone else, but when I've shared it, it's been crazy."

After their son Nate outgrew his nursery, Mrs Mawhinnew, 31, a childcare teacher and husband Ben, 32, a cabinet maker, wanted to convert the space into an ensuite.

They set a budget of less than $5000.

The finished product is a hotel-style bathroom - including a double shower, monochromatic tiles and a marble-top vanity - with the work costing an estimated $3700.

The couple's latest efforts have been featured in the September issue of Bunnings magazine.

The project has been featured in its roundup of 'Australia's best DIY projects of 2020'.

"We bought the house six years ago," Mrs Mawhinnew said.

"We've built a big shed at the back, he did an extension.

"Basically, each year we've given ourselves a project to complete."

The latest project took about six months to complete.

"It was definitely a labour of love," Mrs Mawhinnew laughed. "It's great to see Ben get all this praise, because he's so handy and done such a good job.

"It's our style, a bit of everything that we wanted.

"We just did it because we love the farmhouse look, the American style farmhouse, the Hamptons... We don't have a (specific) style, we just went, 'we want that, we want that'."

The renovation included framing up and installing new window; sheeting the walls and ceiling; tiling/grouting the floor and two walls; installing marble stone; revamping and installing the vanity; plumbing the entire area; finishing touches such as shelves, hooks, mirror and light; and installing the shower screen and slider door.

The majority of the project was completed on weekends, as the couple balanced two young children and work.

Mrs Mawhinnew said staying within budget proved challenging at times.

Tradie friends and handyman relatives helped them achieve their goal.

"We managed to get everything we wanted and at the best price by shopping around and upcycling items," she said.

"Everything we wanted (to do), if we had to pay somebody else to do, we wouldn't have been able to afford it."

The couple are currently undertaking further work on their property.

"When we bought our house I was seven months pregnant with our first child," Mrs Mawhinnew said.

"Our house was a small, but cosy two-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage.

"We have since doubled the floor size of the house and added two more bedrooms and will eventually have two bathrooms, this being the first of the two."
