A swoop on Illawarra construction sites by SafeWork inspectors led to dozens of notices being handed out for unsafe practices - including workers at risk of falling from scaffolding.

The inspectors visited 37 sites in the Wollongong area and issued 47 notices for various problems. Fifteen were for problems with scaffolding, while 13 were related to the risk of people falling while working on a building.
Six of the notices were for electrical risks.

Across the state more than 800 notices were issued for significant safety breaches - 500 of those were for the risk of falling from a height.
"This is no joke - this year alone three people have died and 25 have been seriously injured due to falling from a height," NSW Better Regulation Minister Kevin Anderson said.
"We will not tolerate poor safety and workers' lives being placed at risk on our worksites, and from today we are kicking off a new three-month blitz, focusing on these risks."
