The Eagles extended their dynasty with a thrilling 11-9 victory over Wollongong in Saturday's grand final, Nathan Grogan driving home the winning runs in the ninth inning.

With so many challenges arising this year, Berkeley captain-coach Chad Blanch said this season's title ranks above the previous three.

"It's one of the best feelings in the world," Blanch said. "This is what we dreamed about. Winning three in a row is massive, but four in a row, no one does that. It hasn't been done in the Illawarra since the 70s.

"This is the sweetest victory of the four. We weren't the favourites throughout the year, everyone was talking about the Cardinals. They deserved the favouritism, so to get the win in the fashion we did was pretty special."

While they had won the past three Illawarra grand finals, many considered the Eagles the underdogs heading into the game.

Wollongong had finished on top of the table and prevailed in three of the four clashes between the two teams during the season.

The match hung in the balance with two innings to play, Berkeley leading 8-7 after seven tough innings from starting pitcher Tim Atherton.

With the Australian representative out of the game, the Cardinals pounced. Two runs in the bottom of the eighth had them leading 9-8, just three outs away from ending the Eagles dynasty.

In the end it was a former Cardinal who broke Wollongong's hearts, Grogan delivering in the clutch for Berkeley.

The hit capped a remarkable turnaround, one even Blanch did not see coming.

"Honestly, after we gave up the lead, I thought to myself 'it's been a good run, three in a row is no mean feat.' I was thinking of what I'd say to the boys, praising them for a good season, but the Cardinals were better.

"It just shows the resilience of this team, we were only losing that game for half an inning and we hit straight back in the top of the ninth. Not many teams would have recovered after giving up the lead in the eighth. We just had that belief to keep fighting."

With a fourth title secured, the Eagles quickly turned their focus to 2021.

The bulk of the squad is expected to return and Blanch is confident a fifth-straight title is within their grasp.

"Without a doubt, we're staying together. That's the best thing about this side, there's no imports or guys coming down for one season. We've got 10 local guys and we're all coming back for the five-peat."
