The engine arrived last week and is being readied for installation on the replica of Smithy's famous Fokker Trimotor VH-USU. The 10-year project to get the aircraft back to flying has been a labour of love for a small team at HARS Aviation Museum led by Jim Thurstan.
Fokker Trimotors served as popular passenger aircraft in Europe during the 1920s and the restoration of the flying replica of the Southern Cross built for the Australian Bicentenary will show "how it was" in those early days of flying.
Other aircraft featured at HARS Aviation Museum's Tarmac Days this weekend include a Bell 47 M.A.S.H helicopter flying on Saturday and Sunday along with a recently retired Lockheed AP-3C Orion and a former C-47 Dakota. There will be almost 50 aircraft on display from Friday to Sunday.
