The account by the name of Aus Gov Just Googled (search @GovGoogles) is a parody account and simply tweets web search combinations the government might be googling at a point in time.
Following the federal budget handed down this week Aus Gov Just Googles tweeted simply: "do women vote". It was in equal parts the funniest and most pointed response to the federal budget of the week. Shame it's not a laughing matter.
While there were certainly some admirable measures in the budget announcements, among the biggest losers were women. Sure there was some money, which was identified.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that women have borne the brunt of job losses created by the COVID-19 restrictions. In response, the federal government announced $240 million towards developing more employment opportunities for women. That money is to be split over four years.
Here was an opportunity to make a significant contribution to 51 per cent of our population and help drive the economy at the same time, but the government completely dropped the ball.
"It's tokenistic at best," Community Industry Group CEO Nicky Sloan told the Mercury in response to the government's funding allocation.
Wollongong's Deputy Lord Mayor Tania Brown nailed it when she called it a budget for the blokes.
"It certainly seemed to be a budget for the boys, really disappointing in regards to women's issues," Cr Brown said. "We've talked a lot through COVID-19 about [the rise of] domestic violence and the impacts on women. So I think that was a real glaring omission that there was nothing to help."
No matter the success of the measures announced by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg in the budget, history will forever showed this government failed in its obligation to do more to right the gender imbalance which has been exposed even further through this pandemic.
