Firefighters are trying to contain the blaze in the Royal National Park on Sunday, which the Rural Fire Services believes to have started from a spot fire from a hazard reduction on the west of the highway the day before.
At this stage the Princes Highway is open in both directions under reduced speed at 60 km/h, and the rail line is also open - both had been closed for some time on Saturday afternoon.
The Kangaroo Ridge fire has already burnt through more than 200 hectares of bush, and is burning in a north easterly direction, according to the RFS.
"There has been minimal fire activity overnight and this morning with relatively benign conditions," they said on their website.
Crews will be helped by water bombing aircraft on Sunday, to assist firefighters working to control the fire, particularly in difficult terrain on the north eastern edge of the fire.
Currently there is no threat to property in the area but a large amount of smoke can be seen from the Princes Highway.
