The Gorillas fell 35-22 in the preliminary final, the Lions progressing straight through to the Group Seven decider.
Warilla will now play Jamberoo in next weekend's grand final qualifier, after the Superoos defeated Kiama in Sunday's elimination final.
The 30-10 loss put an end to the Knights premiership defence.
The Gorillas defeat to Gerringong snapped a five-game winning streak, Farmilo conceding his side did not defend well enough to defeat the minor premiers.
"We're not going to beat a team like Gerringong with the way we defended, the penalties we gave away and the amount of ball we turned over," Farmilo said.
"We saw when we did the good things right, we get in the right position, we put on points, but we just didn't do that enough today."
The Lions will enjoy the week off to rest and recuperate before they gear up for their first grand final since 2016. This year's decider will be played on Saturday October 24 at Centenary Field.
Coach Mick Cronin was pleased with his team's performance and said the Lions are looking forward to playing for a premiership.
"This club's got a history of being around for 100 years," Cronin said. "You always play for grand finals, same with coaching, you always want to be in the grand final.
"I think everyone will be very excited, the town will be very excited, we've got two weeks to prepare."
