After six years in the wilderness, the Thirroul Thunderbirds are ready to compete in the 2020 Women's Division One finals series.

In a unique twist, the fourth-placed Thirroul will take on Albion Park. The sides met in the 2014 grand final - the last time the Thunderbirds played finals.

"It's really good to get back into the finals," Thirroul's assistant coach Brad Walter said. "We're going in with the attitude that we've got nothing to lose. We'll be the underdogs against Albion Park, they're a really good team."

Walter said a key to Thirroul's success had been backing the club's youth.

"There's a really good camaraderie and self belief amongst the players. We've been bringing girls through the Youth League team over the last three or four years, adding a couple of players each year," he said.

"The only two players who weren't at the club last year were Grace Vaughan, who returned to the club after a number of years away and time off to have a baby, and also we picked up Mahalia Royters from University who lives at Thirroul and decided to play for us. So the rest of the players came from either Division One, Division Two or Youth League, and one player from division three.

"It's just been building and there's a good vibe amongst the girls this year."
