Around 5:35am, emergency services were called to the intersection of Point Street and the Princes Highway, after a white Mitsubishi Magna full of people collided with an Isuzu ute.
A police spokeswoman said initial inquiries suggest the Magna allegedly ran a red light at speed, before slamming into the front of the ute and then a traffic light.
The driver of the sedan plus two passengers fled the scene, leaving another two passengers behind.
Police plus crews from NSW Ambulance and Fire and Rescue NSW attended the scene.
A 17-year-old female was taken to Wollongong Hospital by ambulance, with a suspected fractured collar-bone.
The 37-year-old male driver of the Isuzu ute was not physically injured, but said he was "still a bit shaken up".
"All good, I was in my car by myself," ute driver Glen Cavanagh told the Mercury.
The Magna has since been seized for forensic examination.
Anyone who may have seen the incident is asked to contact Wollongong Police.
