On Thursday, Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba made a progress inspection of the work currently underway to improve facilities and accessibility at the Central Avenue library.
According to council, accessibility will be improved with a new courtyard entry complete with automatic doors and the provision of an accessible toilet.
There will also be lounge seating and better-equipped spaces for activities, programs and technology.
The library will remain closed during the upgrade with plans to re-open towards the end of the year.
Cr Saliba said that the new changes would provide a much-needed refresh to enhance useability and overall customer experience.
"During the temporary closure of Oak Flats Library, I encourage customers to continue to borrow at City, Albion Park or Warilla Library," she said.
