Good news for book lovers - Lifeline South Coast Big Book Fair is on again!
Happening from October 23-25, many regular features will be back including thousands of books to choose from, a selection of rare and valuable books for sale, a place to drop off your old books and much more.
"This will be our biggest ever book fair, considering that sadly our March event had to be cancelled due to COVID," Lifeline South Coast Big Book Fair coordinator, Alicia Ferderer, said. "So we have truck loads of books!"
With the pandemic, people have been staying at home reading more books but many people have been stressed and anxious too.
"Our Book Fairs are our major fundraising event for Lifeline's 24-hour crisis support service in the Illawarra and South Coast so the fact that we missed March was a huge loss for us," she said.
Held again at the Illawarra Sports Stadium in Berkeley, there will be a few things different this year.
"As far as COVID is concerned, The Big Book Fair is a registered COVID Safe event including QR code entry for contact tracing, sanitiser stations and a changed floor-plan to allow for socially distanced queuing," Alicia said.
"We strongly recommend our customers wear masks and will be monitoring numbers in the stadium.
"We have also switched to a small donation on entry via tap machine, compared to our old gold coin donation on entry as in previous years."
The Lifeline South Coast volunteers have been busy sorting books into a range of different categories which include, fiction, non-fiction, reference, hobbies, travel, children's books, art, science, literature, history, old and rare or just interesting books.
They also have a great range of books in their 'something special' section with a list of available books on the Lifeline South Coast website.
"Our most expensive book is $1000 for a first edition of The Green Ray by Jules Verne and a list of 'special books' (books over $100) that we publish on the website," Alicia added.
"There are about 59 new books that have not been at a book fair (including 18 from March) - these range in price down from $750."
Two examples include:
The Journal of Joseph Banks in the Endeavour 2 vols in slip cases. Commentary by A.M. Lysaght, foreword by (and signed by) Prince Philip. Condition: fine. 103 of 500 published. Quarter dark brown leather, all edges gilt. Genesis Publications in association with Rigby Ltd, 1980 - $500.
Another book is A Critical Edition of the Complete Poems of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey William McGaw. Condition: near fine, a few marks on covers. Dedication by the author. The Edwin Mellen Press, 2020 - $750.
Lifeline South Coast has a Book Collection and Sorting Facility at 1/29-35 Princes Highway, Unanderra that is open 8.30am to 2.30pm Monday to Friday for dropping off book donations.
Many thanks to the volunteers that do an amazing job sorting, categorising, pricing and getting preloved books ready for the Big Book Fair.
"We are looking forward more than ever to this Book Fair, and feeling overwhelmed by the response from excited book lovers in the region that missed our cancelled March event," Alicia said.
The Book Fair is open Friday, October 23 from 9am to 5pm, Saturday, October 24 from 9am to 5pm and Sunday, October 25 from 9am to 4pm.
There has never been a better opportunity to head down and find some new favourite titles for your bookshelf.
