The November 1 protest comes just days after a national study showed that more than 80 per cent of Australians think the effects of climate change are already being felt.
The Climate of the Nation report was released on Wednesday.
The rally will be part of a national set of demonstrations calling for an end to new coal, oil and gas projects.
The demonstrators will also call for the closure of coal mines both in the Illawarra and nationally, and an end to the destruction of sacred Indigenous sites.
Incoming Wollongong University Student Association (WUSA) environment officer Claire Dunning said the protesters would assemble at the Wollongong Town Hall at 1pm before marching through the streets.
"The study released on Wednesday shows that the majority of Australians can see the effects of climate change; the majority think that the recovery should be led by renewables. And yet the Liberals are trying to pay for this crisis by doubling down on their ties to the fossil fuel industry," she said.
"The only way we'll be able to push back against this is by coming back out onto the streets like the climate strikes of last year, by disrupting the status quo to force this government to shut down the fossil fuel industry and replace it with renewables."
Current WUSA environment officer Darcy Turner said protesters would also campaign about local issues on Sunday.
"Here in Wollongong the government is proposing new coal mine expansions under the dams on the escarpment as well as exploration for more gas reserves. We have to fight all of this. We need to continue to organise against those in power and we need to do so with as many people as possible," Turner said.
