Organisers of Honk! Oz were hoping for a scaled down event in January, but this week announced they have officially canned the event.
"In lieu of the festival, a picnic day for local bands is being planned for early January," they wrote on social media. "Thanks to everyone for your support and enthusiasm."
Run by volunteers and boosted by community donations, HONK! Oz is a free non-commercial music festival and takes its name and inspiration from Somerville's HONK! Festival of Activist Street Bands.
The event usually features big bands, workshops, international musicians and a street parade through the Wollongong CBD.
It was originally the brainchild of Lotte Latukefu in 2014, who wanted to celebrate Wollongong's public spaces while blurring the lines between audience members and participation.
