Popping up last week, the large signs at Kembla Grange and Dapto Showground fell victim to a common outsiders' mistake of putting a double O in the city's name.
While acknowledging its mistake in incorrectly spelling the name of NSW's third largest city, the Sydney-based tech company has elected to take a "cheeky" approach, simply painting over the signs with a graffiti-style correction.
Menulog has denied the misspelling was a deliberate publicity stunt, with marketing manager Simon Cheng saying the blunder was his mistake and he was "genuinely sorry".
"We wanted to give something to make locals smile, with a bit of a cheeky nod to the error," a Menulog spokesperson said, of the quick fix.
The billboards created controversy on social media last week, with some prominent Wollongong commentators labelling the move disrespectful to the city's businesses.
Many others thought the double O blunder was a reference to the company's recent advertising campaign, which uses Snoop Dog.
Destination Wollongong general manager Mark Sleigh, who was one of these people, said he would have been concerned if the misspelling had been deliberate. However, he said but if it was a genuine mistake he "accepts it and it is time to move on".
