South Coast Branch Surf Life Saving announced Edwards Constructions Pty Ltd will build the South Coast Surf Life Saving Training, Administration & Storage Centre within the Integrated Emergency Management Centre (IEMC) off Albatross Road, South Nowra.
The centre will house two training rooms, administration offices and storage for lifesaving equipment.
"Our branch of 3,600 members, including 1,200 juniors, nine Surf Life Saving Clubs and the community will benefit from the construction of this building now and into the future," branch president Steve Jones said.
The South Coast branch employs one part-time administration officer, one casual book-keeper and one casual school and community education officer.
"These positions support our members and importantly our education programs in beach safety which are run in the Southern Illawarra, Southern Highlands and Goulburn/Braidwood District," Mr Jones said.
"The community will benefit through local surf and beach safety education programs being provided to the larger population centre of the branch.
"This has been a long project that commenced in 2007 with a vision to provide a much needed centre for training of our members that does not require water related activity. The community will benefit through our community education programs.
"The construction of the centre will also allow for Surf Life Saving state based programs to be delivered locally and also provide office access for two SLS NSW staff working and living in the Shoalhaven."
Funding for the project has come from a Commonwealth Community Development Grant of $1.2m and the NSW Government Sport & Recreation Surf Club Facility Grant of $350,000.
