A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said some 35 firefighters saved nearby properties.
"They are just cleaning up now and making sure they remove the asbestos properly."
He said FRNSW received a call about a house fire about 6.30pm on Thursday.
Police and NSW Ambulance crews were also on site.
Shellharbour Fire Station station officer Daniel Hatten said "the house is pretty well destroyed by fire".
"We were called to a house fire in Queen St, Lake Illawarra. On arrival there was big black smoking flames coming out of the entire house. It was fully involved," he said.
"We were told on route that everyone was out, so we immediately got to work to start extinguishing from an external position until we were able to get power off, gas off and then went in to clear the house and make sure that there was definitely no one inside.
"There were three persons that were reported of being in the house when the fire began but thankfully they were safely out when we arrived."
Authorities are yet to determine how the fire started.
"We will be handing this over to police to investigate the final cause in conjunction with Fire and escue NSW."
