The fire in a single-level fibro house in Queen Street has left a mother and her three children without a home after it was engulfed about 6.30pm.

Generous community members have offered to give clothes, shoes, toys and furniture to the family after community member Darren Malone put a call out on Facebook to facilitate a donation drive.

Mr Malone has been in contact with the children's father who repeatedly told him "thank you" for the community support.

The father told Mr Malone that the mother and three children, one girl aged 11 and two boys aged 6 and 9, were staying with relatives.

The mother and two kids were home at the time of the fire but all evacuated and were not injured.

Hundreds of residents took to Facebook to offer their help with many wanting to know what the family needed.

"Happy to help," many people offered.

"I have a full bedroom suite," one woman said.

"I will go through my kids wardrobes and my own," another woman said. "I am happy to help in any way possible."

"What if we can raise money for family. It's Christmas, we can do a toy raffle or food hamper raffle," one person suggested.

A relative of the family said, "this is so nice, they are my son-in-law's brother."

Vouchers or gift cards have also been offered to enable the family to buy what they need.

Shellharbour Fire Station station officer Daniel Hatten said "the house was pretty well destroyed by fire".

"On arrival there was big black smoking flames coming out of the entire house. It was fully involved," he said.

"We were told on route that everyone was out, so we immediately got to work to start extinguishing from an external position until we were able to get power off, gas off and then went in to clear the house and make sure that there was definitely no one inside.

"There were three people who were reported of being in the house when the fire began but thankfully they were safely out when we arrived."

Authorities are yet to determine how the fire started and it will be investigated by police and Fire and Rescue.

Items can be dropped off to 20 Brookfield Avenue, Warilla. Residents are asked to hold off on donating any large items as there is nowhere to store them. The priority is clothes and toys as well as food vouchers.
