The exhibition Resistance. Resilience. Recovery. is a photographic collection of images of domestic and family violence survivors taken by the Illawarra Mercury's award-winning photographer Sylvia Liber.
The exhibition is a partnership between the Mercury, the Illawarra Women's Health Centre, Domestic Violence NSW and the Waples Marketing Group.
The exhibition, which is open to the public at Wollongong's Project Contemporary Artspace in Keira St until November 29, will help launch a campaign to establish the first Australian Women's Trauma Recovery Centre in the Illawarra.
While the exhibition opening is a private event, it will be live streamed via the Mercury's Facebook page.
Mr Chawla will deliver the keynote speech at the opening and share his own experience after the loss of his sister Nikita at the hands of her partner in 2015.
Niki was stabbed by her husband 35 times after planning to leave him. In response, Mr Chawla founded a campaign called "Not One More Niki", a movement to end violence against women.
The writer, gender equality and mental health advocate has since become a passionate ambassador for causes such as White Ribbon and Our Watch and was a finalist for Young Australian of the Year in 2017.
You can hear Tarang Chawla on the live stream from the Resistance. Resilience. Recovery. exhibition opening from midday on the Mercury Facebook page.
