After moving to the Wellington club from Sydney FC in 2019, McGing got a taste of A-League action last season, playing three games.
And as he continues to prepare in Wollongong for the upcoming competition - starting on December 27 - McGing, 21, hopes to make a defensive spot his own.
"As a footballer, you want to be playing - that's no secret," he said. "Last year, I learned a lot under [teammates] Luke DeVere and Stephen Taylor. Hopefully, this year I can get some more game time and push on from there."
After finishing third last season, McGing said the Phoenix were keen to build on that impressive effort.
"We laid the foundation last season. Obviously, post-COVID was a bit more disappointing for us but we still ended up third," he said. "There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to push on even higher this season."
