Police combed the lakeside grounds of Selina Edith Lacey Park on Tuesday morning, honing in on a bloodstain that may hold clues to what the men were doing before they walked, bleeding, through the doors of Shellharbour Hospital emergency department about 8.45pm on Monday.
Police visiting the hospital on an unrelated matter noticed the brothers but received little information from them, Lake Illawarra Police District's Chief Inspector Brian Pedersen said.
The older brother, aged 26, had been stabbed in the back and was later flown to St George Hospital for surgery. The younger one, 22, had a stomach wound and required surgery at Wollongong Hospital. Both were in a serious but stable condition.
"The officers have seen them, asked them what was going on and tried to establish the facts and from that stage on they wouldn't tell police what had occurred, other than something had happened at Windang," Insp Pedersen said.
Police are now appealing to the public for witnesses, believing the men were involved in an altercation at the park off Judpooley Parade about 8.15pm.
"There's no accusations being levelled at this stage," Insp Pedersen said. "We're not sure if it [the altercation] was amongst themselves or if others were involved. The information they have provided has been extremely limited, therefore we need to seek help from witnesses."
According to police, a female driver took the men to hospital but left after a short time.
Police are hoping the men may yet explain their injuries.
"Both brothers will be spoken to again by investigators, however at this stage we have little to go on - they haven't been co-operative with us. Hopefully that will change today and we can progress this investigation along."
The park neighbours Windang Bowling Club, where detectives have sought out CCTV footage.
Both brothers are from the local area.
Lake Illawarra detectives are calling for anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity at Edith Lacey Park, about 8.15pm on Monday, to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
